Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Electrical panels in houses built for an earlier generation of appliances were not sized for the draw a modern water heater puts on them. Half the homes in Sitka City and Borough, Alaska were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That matters because a licensed contractor quoting a water heater installation here has to open the panel and read what is actually there before a price makes sense. If the service is undersized, the panel work becomes part of the job. The ductwork is not the variable on a water heater install; the electrical is.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing interior rooms with beds, sofa, sink and bathtub, and a cylindrical water heater connected to pipes and a flue pipe passing through the dark shingled roof.

The tank or heating unit is the core of the system. In most homes it stands in a utility room, garage, or basement mechanical space, and its job is to heat and hold water until a fixture calls for it. A new installation means placing that unit, connecting it to the cold supply line, and running the hot outlet line to the rest of the house.

The pressure relief valve mounts directly on the unit and is a required safety component on every installation. The flue or venting assembly exits through a wall or roof and carries combustion gases out of the living space on gas-fired units. A dedicated shutoff valve on the cold inlet line lets a contractor isolate the unit without cutting water to the whole house.

The drawing shows a representative layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your home's configuration.
